WHAT IS THE THIRD WORLD, AND WHY ARE SOM COUNTRIES DEVELOPING WHILE OTHERS CLAIM TO BE
DEVELOPED?
We started the class with a presentation about the thought of Foucault. In this topic we saw which countries are in evolution and how a western teacher must work in a country in progress. In Focault the language and its discourses are very important because they can organize the relationships between people in the same society.
Then in my group we discussed about the book “Systema Natura”. This book labels people in order to their origin. In all over the continents people are equal but at the same time they are very different also. In this book Americans, Europeans, Africans, etc has nothing in common. Nowadays we have a hybrid culture in which all the different continents are mixed. We can find people in each country from all over the world, for example in Spain there are a lot of people from Morocco, Rumania, South America and so on. But we don’t have to mark anyone for their continent, because all the people is different. Yes, if we are from the same country we can have some aspects in common but not all, because I think there aren’t two people equal anywhere. It’s not because where you come from.
Macro development discourses:
· Read the introduction to Escobar´s “Encountering Development”.
· Identify the three main discourses: The Truman discourse, the UN discourse, and the Escobar discourse) on development/developing countries. And list the main characteristics of the three discourses.
Harry Truman discourse: He announced his concept of a fair deal (the world to solve the problems of the underdeveloped areas of the globe). The poverty is a handicap and threat both to them and to more prosperous areas. We must make available to developing countries our modern scientific and our technical knowledge so they can improve because the greater production is the key to prosper. Capital, science and technology were the main ingredients that would make one massive revolution possible.
United Nations discourse: his objective is designing concrete policies and measures for the economic development of underdeveloped countries. Old social institutions have to disintegrate and very few communities are willing to pay the full price of economic progress.
Arturo Escobar discourse: the discourse and strategy of development produced its opposite: massive underdevelopment and impoverishment, untold exploitation and oppression and the third world has been produced by the discourses and practices of development since their inception in the early post- World War II period.
Micro development discourses:
· Identify the different power relations in the two Eritrean cases. Explain your choices and use the two Eritrean cases as point of departure for a discussion of the challenges for a teacher or social educator from the West who works in a developing country.
First case: Mohammed Seid Shemshef Elementary and Junior School.
- In class there is one big book and it is the teacher
- The teacher makes fun games with words in English for students to have fun and learn with letters and children are able to construct simple sentences in English
- But the downside of this school is that teachers support corporal punishment on students
Like a teacher I must say that I don’t approve this behavior. Corporal punishment is not the solution to solve problems. We must use other methods if we want to do that a classmate knows that their behavior it’s not correct and they need to change it. We can use the punishment but in an appropriate way.
WHAT IS THE THIRD WORLD, AND WHY ARE SOME COUNTRIES DEVELOPING WHILE OTHERS CLAIM TO BE DEELOPED?
The term Third World was coined to refer to countries that do not belong to any of the two blocks that were faced in the Cold War. Now the term used to refer to developing countries.
Why developing countries and developed countries exist is all because of the relations between these countries. But the government never do nothing to help, they seem like they are worried of the developing countries but they don't react
